Empowerment, Behavior and Social Factors of Domestic Violence in the North Eastern States of India

Abstract
Domestic Violence is detrimental to the society and is linked to several harmful effects on mental health and wellbeing. The significant priority given to end this menace is reflected on the Goal no. 5.2 of Sustainable Development Goals which states “Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.” In India, Domestic Violence is a recurring issue that needs to be addressed. According to Smile Foundation reported 2025, over 29% of women report intimate partner violence. This study is an attempt to examine some determinants of Domestic Violence in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. It attempts to examine the status of domestic violence in NER of India and assess what factors are correlated to the domestic violence. The data is taken from the fifth (2019–21) rounds of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5).The study reveals that Manipur has the highest reported domestic violence in Northeast India, significantly exceeding national averages. Despite variations, all Northeastern states report some level of domestic violence and is linked to some social and behavioural factors. The study finds link between women’s empowerment and domestic violence.
